The existing 2-story Beatley Building was razed, and a new five-story building is being constructed in its place. The existing, abutting, 5-story Lefavour Hall will also be renovated, and a new exterior created to match that of the new building.
To prepare for the demolition of the Beatley
Building, which housed the existing library, a new interim
library had to be created in LeFavour Hall, complete with
utilities and communication system relocations. This affected
classrooms and offices that occupy the interim spaces.
For the new skin of LeFavour Hall to function
properly, a temporary facade first had to be constructed
inside the building to create a proper
safety and weather barrier. This occurred while the building
was fully occupied and functioning.
The new, 61,900 s.f. Beatley Library building
will be a concrete structure constructed via a pan slab system,
thus creating greater
floor-to-floor
space than allowable with steel construction. The exterior
will be comprised of glass curtainwall, brick, limestone,
metal panels and punched windows. Three balconies will
provide excellent views of the campus and surrounding city.
The new
structure will be connected to both Lefavour Hall and
the Main Campus Building, and is attached so that the Beatley
and Lefavour buildings will share common open spaces
as
well as a new, main mechanical and electrical room. Beatley
Library
will feature a grand entrance on Avenue Louis Pasteur
that will serve as a main entrance into the campus.
The new Beatley Library will house ten high-tech
classrooms, a large function space, a lecture area, multiple
offices, a photo lab,
computer labs and new facilities for the Archives and the
Communications
Department.
Lefavour Hall will remain open and operational throughout construction.
