Ground up construction of this new, 85,000
s.f., multi-purpose tower, with ten levels above grade and
one level
below, involved two theaters, two television studios, a dance
studio, seminar rooms, support spaces for the adjacent Emerson Majestic Theatre and faculty offices. The new building also
serves as the service court for all surrounding
buildings. The foundation consists of drilled caissons, four feet in diameter, extending
80 feet to the bedrock below.
The building is completely wired for phone and
data and is connected to the campus data system. Furthermore,
all HVAC, electrical and plumbing had to be carefully constructed
to substantially eliminate noise and comply with the stringent
acoustical needs of the building's theaters.
Accessibility to the site was extremely challenging
as the main access was through narrow Allen's Alley. The new
tower is bounded on the North and West sides by 120 Boylston
Street, on the South and West sides by the State Transportation
Building and on the East side by the Emerson Majestic Theater.
The scope also included renovations to the adjacent Walker
Building and Majestic Theater.
The new structure connects to the 120
Boylston Street building at the ground, second and fifth levels,
and has its public entry on Boylston Place.
