New England Aquarium
Unforgettable Boston Theater
Boston, MA
|
 |
Demolition of existing space on the first
floor of the Boston Harbor Garage, located across from
the main entrance of the New England Aquarium Theater,
provided for the Unforgettable Boston Theater. This
interactive theater, showcasing an historic tour of
Boston through the ages, features complex theater lighting
and soundproofing, contained in a curved drywall space.
This $540,000 project was constructed in a partnership
with the Carpenters Apprenticeship Program and in conjunction
with the Boston Millennium Project. The scope also included
the fit up of new office space at the adjacent 77 Milk
Street location.

Discovery Theater

This sound proof,
interactive theater was an interior fit-up on board the
vessel "Discovery," which is moored to the piers
at the New England Aquarium. Curved drywall partitions
were lined with rigid fiber insulation to contain all
sound within the theater and then covered with faux finishes,
including perforated steel panels, to create the impression
of a navy vessel. A galvanized steel ramp and steel rails
were added to complete the nautical appearance.

Medical Center

The Aquarium Medical Center is a full-service
working animal hospital doing double duty as an exhibit
at the New England Aquarium. It was built during business
hours in the main exhibit hall with tourist traffic
reaching 5,000 people per day. Construction included
installation of overhead screens to provide close-up
views of the intricate veterinarian work as well as
two-way audio equipment allowing visitors to communicate
with the medical staff. Five interactive computer stations
were also installed so that visitors could explore additional
material on aquatic care.
Construction requirements included custom-designed
casework and special glazing applications. In addition,
Lee Kennedy Co. built a specially-designed, stacked-wood
wall that separates those viewing the hospital activities
from the main aquarium tanks. The job was completed
in a condensed build-out schedule of four weeks.
