Winter 2000

A Little More than Your Typical "Team Building Exercise"

Bates Hall boasts the largest barrel-vaulted ceiling in the country.

Millwork was painstakingly removed and refurbished, piece by piece.

Lee Kennedy Company, in conjunction with the Boston Public Library and Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott architects, accepted the Associated General Contractors' (AGC) Grand Honor Award for the company's involvement on the second phase of the Boston Public Library McKim Building restoration. The award was presented October 30, 1999 at the Build Massachusetts Awards Program X at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge.

Through a diligent team effort between owner, architect and contractor, the main reading room of the 104 year-old McKim Building underwent a complete historical restoration from October of 1996 to April of 1997. All millwork, windows and fireplace casings were attentively refurbished, piece by piece, along with the John Elliot ceiling mural, The Triumph of Time. Technological enhancements to the Catalogue, Newspaper, and Micro Text rooms, were performed and a new two-story northwest corridor connecting the McKim and Johnson buildings was built. The marble and granite promenade of the Grand Courtyard was renovated as well, with the creation of a second floor walkway atop the promenade.

The Build Mass Awards are given in the categories of performance, merit, and honor, in addition to the Grand Honor Award which represents the top project in all categories. Entries are evaluated on how well the building team–general contractor, owner and architect–work together to enhance the owner's investment in the project. Winning entries exhibit criteria such as excellence in project management, project team effectiveness and client service, as well as innovation in construction techniques and materials, sensitivity to the environment and contribution to the community.

"The McKim Building restoration was a momentous project. Its success was due to the persistence and cooperation of the entire building team," notes Lee Kennedy Company President Lee Michael Kennedy. "We are pleased to have been a part of the team that's responsible for such a significant project in the community," he adds.

Director of Marketing Shaila Kennedy, submitted the Boston Public Library project to the selection jury in June. The jury, comprised of individuals from the fields of engineering, architecture, facilities management and real estate, evaluated projects over the summer and narrowed the submissions to a list of finalists in each category. The jury met as a group on August 25th to endorse their recommendations for particular projects, at which time, the winners were determined.

Bob McCluskey accepted the prestigious award on behalf of the Lee Kennedy Company and was joined by David Bliss from Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott and Bernard Margolis from the Boston Public Library. Other attendees from Lee Kennedy Company included Field Supervisor Chris Pennie, Field Operations Manager Jeff Preston, Vice President of Estimating Dick Robbins and Shaila Kennedy.
