State-of-the-art fire suppression, lighting
and mechanical systems are now in place at Harvard Universitys
largest library to provide enhanced protection of the librarys
3 million volumes. Lee Kennedy Co. recently completed Phase
I of the Widener Stacks Renovation designed by Einhorn
Yaffee Prescott Architecture & Engineering, p.c. The major
mechanical renovation, which began in June of 1999, covered
215,000 square feet. The project also included the renovation
of two interior courtyards that were infilled with three floor
levels and capped with skylights to increase reading room,
office area and mechanical space.
Now underway is Phase II in which Lee Kennedy
Co. will perform the renovation of 100,000 square feet on
the north side of the building. The scope entails life safety
and MEP updates as well as restoration and architectural upgrades
to programmatically fit the modern needs of the library. Widener
Library will remain open and in full operation throughout
the duration of the project scheduled for completion in March
of 2004.
The Red Sox owners are not the only new addition
at Kenmore Square. Hotel Commonwealth
is rapidly taking shape in the bustling Square. The four-star
hotel will reinstate splendor and brilliance to a long neglected
area of Boston. Designed by Ahearn | Schopfer & Associates
pc, Hotel Commonwealth will feature a French Empire façade
and high-end interior finishes. The 178,000 square-foot hotel
will contain suites, function rooms, a fine dining restaurant,
a French bistro and a sidewalk retail promenade. Completion
is scheduled for December of 2002.
Lee Kennedy Co. is performing preconstruction
and construction services for the new library
at Middlebury College in Vermont. The 143,000 square
foot building, designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates
Architects llc, will fit the classic integrity of the college,
while serving as an information center for tomorrows
student. Environmentally friendly materials will be used throughout
with particular emphasis placed on using locally-provided
materials. Also at Middlebury College, LKCo is constructing
Atwater Commons, a residential complex comprised of two new
dormitories and an attractive, elliptical-shaped dining hall
featuring rooftop landscaping. Atwater Commons was designed
by Kieran Timberlake Associates LLP.
The span of LKCos preconstruction services
not only spreads north of Massachusetts, but south as well.
Rhode Island School of Design
recently hired LKCo to provide limited preconstruction services
for the schools RISD Center project in Providence. World-renowned
Rafeal Moneo is the design architect and Perry Dean Rogers
| Partners Architects is the architect of record. The Center
entails six stories of new construction and the renovation
of two adjacent buildings to total approximately 94,000 square
feet.
