Lee Kennedy Co. performed preconstruction and
construction services for the new 143,000 s/f library at
Middlebury College. This three-story structure was designed
to fit the classic, academic integrity of the college, while
serving as an information center for tomorrow’s student.
The flexible space allows for increased growth of conventional
print media as well as new electronic technology.
The focal point of the library is the
large open rotunda from which one can see a full view of
the library’s
three floors and full views of the outdoor Vermont scenery.
Technological features of the library include a Web-conference
room with Web-casting abilities, an electronic classroom,
and a lecture hall with data connections to the campus network
and the Internet.
The library’s skin is comprised of similar materials
to those of surrounding campus buildings--granite, limestone
and marble. Conventional stacks were constructed in the library
and the floor levels were constructed to support 300 psf.
Group study areas dominate the make-up of the building with
subsequent individual study areas. Environmental concerns
and energy efficiency were addressed in the design of the
building. Environmentally friendly materials were used throughout
and triple-glazed windows were installed for maximum energy
efficiency. Climate control systems were likewise installed
to protect the library’s collection.
