Harvard University – Widener Phase I & II
Cambridge, MA
Originally constructed in 1915 the library’s systems were not outfitted to properly protect its collections. To that end, state-of-the-art fire protection and climate control systems were installed while major restoration and preservation efforts took place. Two interior courtyards now serve as offices and reading rooms, and existing study carrels and office areas were renovated. Intense logistics and coordination during the five-year renovation resulted in the restoration of architectural features as well as the creation of additional program space and a data center to service all seven Harvard libraries. The library remained open and operational throughout the duration of work and the Widener Stacks renovation received the Build Mass Award for project team effectiveness from the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts.
