Boston Public Library McKim Building Restoration
Phase II & IIC
Copley Square, Boston, MA
This historic library received a complete restoration of Bates Hall, the main reading room; restoration and technological enhancement of the Catalogue, Newspaper, and Microtext rooms; creation of a new two-story Northwest Corridor connecting the McKim and Johnson buildings; and the restoration of the marble and granite promenade of the Grand Courtyard. All windows were removed, refurbished, and reinstalled. The restoration team reconditioned several murals dating back to 1895, all of the marble, terrazzo and sandstone, as well as all the millwork. A new elevator was installed along with new MEP systems, HVAC, skylights and a faster book conveyer system. This project received the Build Massachusetts Grand Honor Award from Associated General Contractors MA and encompassed approximately 100,000 sf.
