Lee Kennedy Co. Completes Hadley Apartments
Lee Kennedy Co. recently completed the Hadley Apartment renovation project in Worcester, MA, helping to revitalize the downtown neighborhood with the addition of market-rate and affordable-housing. Lee Kennedy Co. completed the 80,000 square-foot gut renovation in just 10 months. Designed by Fine Associates, the historic building houses one, two and three-bedroom rental units, 5,000 square feet of ground floor retail space and is equipped with all new MEP and HVAC systems.
The Old State House Tower Restoration Receives Preservation Achievement Award
Lee Kennedy Co.’s historic restoration of the Old State House tower has been recognized with a 2009 Preservation Achievement Award. Given by the Boston Preservation Alliance, the Old State House was named a winner in the ‘Restoration of an Iconic Boston Landmark’ category. Lee Kennedy Co. collaborated with The Bostonian Society, Tellalian Associates Architects & Planners and Preservation Technology Associates on this complex historic restoration. In just four months, the team re-gilded the tower’s gold dome, restored the windows, applied new copper roofing and wood siding and performed other repairs in an effort to make the 295-year-old structure watertight.
Lee Kennedy Co. Selected for Expansion & Renovation at The Boston Conservatory
Lee Kennedy Co. has been awarded an extensive renovation and expansion project by The Boston Conservatory. The project is the first in over 50 years for the prestigious performing arts institute; the new and renovated facilities will provide performance and rehearsal spaces in addition to technical and utility upgrades. New construction consists of a four-story, 32,000 square-foot facility to house dance studios and an orchestra rehearsal hall. The existing three-story building next door will be renovated to include a 300-seat theater with state-of-the-art audio/ visual, lighting, dimming and rigging systems and back-of-house functions.

Lee Kennedy Co. Completes LEED-Certifiable Building for Simmons College
Lee Kennedy Co. recently completed the Simmons College School of Management and Academic building - its 12th successful project on the campus of this prestigious college. The five-story, 66,500 square-foot facility houses offices, classrooms, study spaces and an Executive Education floor. A new 715-car below-grade garage was also included in the scope of work.
Designed by Boston-based Cannon Design, the School of Management and Academic building is 38% more efficient than similarly sized buildings. The facility features a green roof to lower heating and cooling costs, roof vegetation to absorb and filter rainwater, enhanced indoor air quality, underground parking to maximize green space, and restroom facilities that reduce water consumption by 34%. The college is pursing LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Lee Kennedy Co. Staff Earn LEED Accreditation
Continuing its commitment to maintain a full staff of LEED Accredited Professionals, Lee Kennedy Co is proud to announce that seven additional team members recently passed the rigorous LEED Professional Accreditation exam. Scott Giles, Project Executive; Nancy Notarangelo, Project Manager; Noel Muller, Project Manager; Dan Lebeidz, Superintendent; Oliver Libby, Superintendent; Chick Milford, Superintendent and Adam Thibodeau, MEP Coordinator, all earned their LEED AP status. The company expects that all operations staff will be LEED Accredited Professionals by the close of 2009.
Lee Kennedy Co. Awarded Riverway House Project at Wheelock College
Lee Kennedy Co. will perform a full gut rehab and expansion of the existing four-floor residence hall to increase student capacity to 128 beds over 31,000 square feet. The team will complete extensive structural upgrades, infill the rear of the building and install new MEP systems, finishes and an elevator. Exterior work will include selective masonry repairs and the installation of all new windows in addition to utility upgrades and the creation of new walkways. Working with DiMella Shaffer in a design/ build capacity, Lee Kennedy Co. will complete the project on an aggressive 29-week schedule to accommodate student move-in for the fall 2009 semester.

Lee Kennedy Co. Celebrates Topping-Off at St. Luke’s Hospital
Lee Kennedy Co. joined Southcoast Hospitals Group project team members, New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang, and St. Luke’s Hospital neighbors to celebrate the topping off of the hospital’s new parking garage. The topping off comes just six months after the team mobilized on site following an extensive preconstruction process. Designed by MFPA Inc. and Newbury Design Associates Inc., the garage will provide parking for 341 vehicles. Located on the hospital campus, the 31,000-square-foot garage will allow St. Luke’s to maintain a high level of accessibility and convenience for patients, visitors and the neighborhood at one of the busiest community hospitals in Massachusetts.
Lee Kennedy Co. Completes New Facility for Swissnex Boston
Lee Kennedy Co. recently completed a vertical addition for swissnex Boston, Consulate of Switzerland, atop the organization’s existing collaborative space in Cambridge. The contractor worked in a design/ build capacity with Swiss design firm Convergeo and local architect Darlow Christ Architects on the project. The contemporary design features few right angles, creating an “engineering puzzle” that required a carefully installed radius steel frame and features a segmented, curved glass curtainwall façade. A green roof surrounds the new addition, lowering energy costs and reducing the building’s carbon footprint. Cork flooring was also installed throughout the new space, further adding to the environmentally-friendly design.
Lee Kennedy Co. Helps Christen South Bay Harbor Trail
Lee Kennedy Co. joined non-profit organization Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Mayor Thomas Menino, and other corporate sponsors to dedicate the South Bay Harbor Trail on Friday, November 7th. The dedication took place at the Binford Street Park in the Fort Point Channel. The 3.5-mile pathway begins in Roxbury and stretches through South Boston before coming to an end at Fan Pier. Lee Kennedy Co. is a long-time supporter of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. The company donated time and materials to install the trail’s inaugural buoy in Binford Street Park on Gillette’s corporate campus.

Boston College Selects Lee Kennedy Co. for St. Williams Hall Renovation
Boston College chose Lee Kennedy Co. to lead the renovation of St. Williams Hall. The nine-month project kicks off in late October and will be complete next July for the start of the fall semester. Lee Kennedy Co.’s team will perform a full gut rehab to the existing building. Beginning with interior demolition and asbestos abatement, the team will then install all new MEP, HVAC and fire protection systems before fitting out the new space. Exterior renovations will include cleaning and re-pointing the masonry, new windows and copper cornice work. Designed by Dimella Shaffer, the 47,000 square-foot facility will house classrooms, lecture halls, office space and a chapel.
Lee Kennedy Co. Completes Fast-Track Fens Dining Hall at Simmons College
Lee Kennedy Co. continues to grow its successful partnership with Simmons College, recently completing its 13th project on campus – the renovation and expansion of the Fens Dining Hall.
Over six months, the team renovated approximately 15,000 square feet of dining, kitchen and servery spaces and constructed a new 3,000 square-foot addition. An underground walkway between the new building and neighboring below-grade parking garage was also put in place. Lee Kennedy Co.’s team performed extensive preconstruction services, working closely with Simmons College and architect DiMella Shaffer to determine the best options for the expansion, considering budget, constructibility and functionality.

Lee Kennedy Co. wins Associated General Contractors' Safety Award
Lee Kennedy Co. was awarded the Associated General Contractors' 2007 Merit Award for its Exemplary Safety Record. The award, given to only nine contractors, recognizes companies that maintain an incident rate 25% below the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Incident Rate. This is the third safety award Lee Kennedy Co. received in 2008. The company also won the Massachusetts Safety Council's Group Safety Award and earned Blue-level status - the highest possible - in AGC and OSHA's Construction Health & Safety Excellence (CHASE) program for the third consecutive year.
Lee Kennedy Co. Brings The Old State House Tower Back to Life
Lee Kennedy Co. recently completed a complex historical restoration of the tower atop Boston’s Old State House. Over a four-month period, the team re-gilded the gold tower dome, restored the windows, applied new copper roofing and wood siding and performed other repairs in an effort to make the 295-year-old structure watertight. The tower restoration is the first construction project officially completed as part of the National Park Service Centennial Fund, which is aimed at restoring the nation’s historic landmarks and natural resources in anticipation of the agency’s 100th anniversary in 2016. |
