Middlebury College - Atwater Commons
110 Storrs Avenue, Middlebury, VT
The Atwater Commons project consisted of the construction of two residence halls totaling 85,000 sf which provide 154 beds, along with living rooms, full kitchens, and study, seminar and laundry facilities, and a new elliptically shaped 18,700 sf, 225-seat dining hall and lounge. A rooftop garden provides excellent insulation, protection of the roofing membrane, and reduction of impervious surfaces on campus. Materials selected for the project reflect the college’s commitment to using materials local to Vermont and that are sustainable to the environment. Construction included water main replacement and removal of bedrock in order to excavate to the project base grades. The residence halls are naturally ventilated, incorporating through-floor suite plans, transom windows and ceiling fans in all rooms.
